The Little Things in My Life That Help My Depression

There is a song that always comes to mind when I need to remember things that make me feel better. That song happens to be My Favorite Things from the movie Sound of Music. It helps me make my list of my favorite things that ease my depression.

The Little Things in My Life That Help My Depression

  • Writing
  • Music
  • My dogs
  • getting phone calls from my niece and nephews
  • an ice-cold Dr. Pepper
  • Reading
  • Going for walks
  • Rainy days
  • baby animals

So, let me tell you a little bit about why each of these helps out my depression. Of course, there are a lot of other things that help me with my depression, but these are the most helpful.

I write all the time. It’s the best way for me to get my feelings out and dumping my thoughts out on paper. Because of the anxiety, that mixes with my depression it is really hard for me to talk about the things that bug me or that are messing with my mind. So, I escape through writing!

Oh, how I love my music. I can almost always feel better with a good jam session. Just ask random people that pass me on the highway. I always see them laugh because I am dancing or singing at the top of my lungs.

My Dogs

I love my boys! As you have probably seen I have an 18 month Catahoula and a one-year-old corgi/weenie dog mix and they are my world. As soon as I get home their tails are wagging and they are smiling from ear to ear. (Yes my dogs’ smile). They just know exactly what I need after a tough day battling depression. Although they can drive me insane, I still love them just like they were my children.

Phone Calls From My Niece and Nephews

I love my babies and getting to hear their voices always make me smile! I literally have the best connection with all of them and if you know me, you will get an ear full about them. I get to be their best friend and cheerleader and watch them grow up to be awesome adults.

Ice Cold Dr. Pepper!

This one explains itself!

Thank God for books! I have been able to escape from most of my tough days because of books! Like I have always said you can go on the best adventures through the pages of books!

Going For Walks

This is another great way for me to clear my head and to get some exercise. When I go on walks I just listen to nature and let everything go. It has saved my sanity more than once.

Rainy Days

A lot of people see days like this as a bummer, but I see them as starting something over. After it rains everything looks so bright and beautiful and it just feels like the ugliness is all gone and you can start over.

Baby Animals

Seriously how can you not be happy when you look at baby animals! They are just so adorable and innocent and I love them! So, just do yourself a favor and google baby animals and just spend some time looking at them!

That same song always comes into my head when I’m feeling sad! It’s pretty much automatic lol. I love love love the way you describe rainy days, such a good way to put a positive spin on something people often complain about. Very well written post! Pinned and tweeted! 💙

Great list! I love to read and write as well, but when it gets bad I really find it hard to concentrate on these things. I also get really sensitive to noises so I don’t like having music on, or even the TV on in the background. I’ve really fell in love with art through using it to cope, just plopping paint or watercolour down and mixing it all together is so soothing. And rainy days are the best 🙂

Going for a walk or blasting music and singing at the top of my lungs always puts me in a better mood, too.
